HDL Cholesterol

Alternative Names
  • Cholesterol
  • HDL (High Density Lipoprotein)
  • HDL Direct
  • High Density Lipoprotein
  • Alpha-Lipoprotein Cholesterol

Test Code: 4535

CPT: 83718
Tests Included HDL
Use Many epidemiological investigations have demonstrated the strong and independent inverse association between HDL-Cholesterol and the risk of coronary artery disease. It has been proposed that HDL particles, through the uptake and transport of Cholesterol from peripheral tissue to the liver (reverse Cholesterol transport), protects against the development of atheromatous plaques.
Clinical Utility Under the guidelines issued by The National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel 2 (NCEP ATP 2), it is recommended that both HDL-Cholesterol and Total Cholesterol should be measured in the initial screening for hypercholesterolemia.

Exercise, moderate alcohol consumption and oral estrogen therapy can help raise HDL concentrations. Decreased levels are associated with obesity, stress, cigarette smoking and diabetes mellitus.
Intended Patient Population 18+ and Older Adult Males & Females
Patient Preparation Fasting prefered, but not required. If HDL cholesterol results are used to calculate the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, fasting is required since triglycerides concentration is used in the calculation.
